I participated in the LOTAC Catch n Clean steelhead tournament this weekend. MY fish got second place in the size category at 32". The winner was barely over 32".

Dad and I had a great weekend hitting Chinooks, Cohos, Steelhead, and some spectacular Brown Trout.

The fish were in force and very willing. I even had the pleasure of watching a big male king annihilate my skein. We ended up landing 14 after hooking upwards of thirty. I even got two cohos.

Salmon fishing is heating up on the Salmon River. Some good rain brought a lot of fresh chrome into the river, and the fish are getting bigger. One hen I landed weighed around thirty pounds and was 42 inches long.

Tim and I hit the staircase on 9/17/11 early in the morning. We managed 12 good hookups. I landed 2 Chinooks, and Tim landed one steelhead.

Early runs on the SR

The first Salmon of this season have pushed there way into the river over the last week. These fish are very fresh and difficult to land Early on, the majority of fish were in the lower section. The Staircase was hot for a few days. But the majority of this first push has migrated upstream, even as far as the lower fly zone. I was able to land one out of five hookups this week. It was a fresh male of fifteen pounds. He bit a green egg.

We decided to take a trip out west to fish a Lake Erie tributary. On the first day we hooked around six or seven and landed three. We kept one for some nice fillets and a whole ton of eggs. over night, a huge storm hit and the creek became very high and muddy and unfishable, so we left early.

The last two times we've gone, it's been colder. On Sunday we had snow. The fish are gettin harder to raise, but we're still landing multiple fish each time.

Dad and I managed to hook 15 and land 7 steelhead, including one male Dad got going around 13 lbs on Sunday. The weather was in the twenties for most of the day.

Today we joined the ten percent club. Between Dad, Tim, and I, 14 steelhead were landed and 22 hooked in a single morning. It started out hot, and though it slowed down towards the end, we were still hooking a few fish. They were biting everything from blue spawn to Green Eggs and Ham.

We hit em pretty hard today in our favorite secret spot. We landed 4 out of 13.

The day started kind of slow with a few takes here and there, then progressed. I hooked two fish and lost both of them before dad hooked and landed a nice male. I then returned to my spot and promptly hooked and landed a large male of 12lbs or better. It battled me for a long way down stream before It tired out then dad netted it. Then after a little while with no action, we switched spots to a nice fork in the River we had been meaning to try. I fished a nice bend there and dad went down stream. I hooked a small hen quickly and lost it. Then dad came back up and I hooked another hen of 11lbs and after a long battle , and with help from dad, The fish was landed. Good day.

Dad and I landed two large salmon on Monday after water levels came down to good levels. They were pretty ugly.

We were bummin around the Sandys today, only a few days after flood condition waters on the creek came back to almost normal, I stumbled upon a washed up dead salmon which I estimated to be around 35 to 40 pounds.

So we went up to fish creek in the ADKs and had some awesome brookie fishing. We fished a series of nice trout ponds and cold brook, which runs from Ampersand mountain and holds a large population of native brookies, including some absolute monsters.

So I was down at the creek on wednesday in a new hole. A guy named Sean was fishing there too. I only caught 3 little guys while Sean landed the biggest fish I've ever seen on the creek. It was a brown going 24 inches and probably 5 pounds. I took a pic with my cell before he released it, but I'm yet to figure out how to get pictures off of it.

Got a few more nice ones today. You can really tell which ones are stocked and which are wild. The one at the top is a big fat bullhead(or white catfish, not sure which yet) I got out of a deep slow moving hole.

For Browns and brookies, We use mostly salted minnows. Towards the mid season starting in late july, we start using more garden worms. My rod is a medium action ugly stick, with a quantum spinning reel. I have an ultra light shakespeare but I find that the ugly stick is actually more sensative. This year, I'm gonna try to find some of the more elusive native rainbows. The owner of a tackle shop near by says that their numbers are up lately.
This will actually be the first year that we break the 300 trout mark in less than 2 months. We're currently up to 296, and I'm going tonight.

Yup, that's me, and that's a salmon. It was a beauty Jack that I got at 6 am on our first day out in Michigan. When I said I'm non judgemental, that doesn't include snaggers. You can get King salmon to bite in the rivers. Snagging is illegal.

I am not a snobby trout fisherman, I am a bait using spin fisherman. I practice catch and release but I don't look down upon keeping a couple for dinner sometimes.
